This guy is an asshat!!! He must not have paid attention AT ALL in his 6 hour first jump course that he's required to take before this type of jump. First of all he pulled his cutaway cable instead of his main ripcord, then the instructor pulls his main parachute so thats why you see it come off his harness right away. Second, you are taught to have a landing area picked out by 1000 ft. and to avoid obstacles like power lines. He proceeded to sue the dropzone after that. I'd be surprised if he'd be welcome at any dropzone in the US if he ever wanted to do it again.

You're not missing anything. The media always botches up reports on skydiving incidents. The main chute flew off because the student pulled the cutaway handle instead of the ripcord and the instructor pulled the ripcord to get rid of the main so he could properly open his reserve (2nd chute).
