More than likely what is happening isn't the tank exploding, but pressure from the relief valve allowing high pressure propane to escape at a high velocity, then its ignited all at once by the near by fire.

I'll stick with my Naptha lantern. Relief valve or no, I think'd you'd still be pretty singed.
