This story was going across the bottom of the screen of my tv during "Lost".

It was supposed to be going from LAX to JFK. But it had nose gear problems & was circling LAX until they got clearance to make an emergency landing.

You know, my sister is coming to visit me for Thanksgiving week & she's supposed to be flying that airline.
Should I be concerned ? I mean, how do I know that all of their planes aren't falling apart ? They ARE a discount airline.

Well, yes and no.
The landing gear is run by hydraulics. It could have been a simple proportioning valve that got stuck.

Now for the interesting part: The people I've known that are pilots, and have piloted for major airlines, or know someone that has, have said that 'If you knew of all of the things that fail during a flight, you'd never fly again'
But, don't fear. Most of the systems on an airplane this size are double and triple redundant.
That means if one hydraulic system, for example fails, there are 2 more to back it up. This ensures that it makes it home safely.
In some cases, the final resort is a small turbine core that pops out of the plane and uses the rushing air to spin it, and its connected to a generator and or a hydraulic pump.

The F-4 Phantoms were famous for having this particular redundency.

Well, that makes me feel better. Thank you !!

I never get nervous when I have to fly. But, when my friends or family fly, I worry myself sick. Everybody knows that I MUST be called the moment they get into the airport. I'll even buy them a $5 calling card if I have to.

I don't hang out here much anymore...

hell no, I woudnt it was I think a piece that broke or sumin. (thats why the piece/wheel twisted) The airline picked this maker over boing or w/e. I was actually hoping for the plane to burst in flames or the front wheel fall off and more sparks, im a lil crazed like that. But I must say they hire exalent poilets!!

I would of been sh*ting my pants knowing there was a problem for over 3 hours

Things do happen, not everything can be perfect. It doesn't even have to involve human error, somethings just go bad sometimes.

The due date for the new addition is July 10th of 2009!

I have found in Years of flying that these things are rare, and unusual to say the least, I have many many hours of flight time and would rather fly than ride My bike through town, the odds are much better for survival in a plane than any other mode of transport(save for walking of course, and that is iffy in My town).

Reguardless, these folks on this flight will need new undershorts for sure.

Your guess is as valid as Mine

One other thing, Jet Blue has tvs in thier planes, so they may of been watching themselves fly around for 3 hours on TV. Scary and cool at the same time

I remember this day and i am glad that everyone made it out ok.
America could not go through another plane tragedy like 911.
It would cause havoc at the airlines again.
and I pray and hope nothing of the sort happen again
