Me and my brother did the very same thing on the 4th, only we used a 'M80' under a bucket. It flew as high as the top floor of his house

Something that would make that can go possible higher is to use a trough with about 6" of water in it. Put something that floats in the water, put the "fire cracker" on the floaty, then put the garbage can over that. It does 2 things. 1, Since the garbage can won't be distributing its own weight in water it won't float, and 2, as it settles to the bottom it will compress the air trapped inside.

We used to do it all the time with a tuna fish can or small tomato can and simple little fire crackers.

now where did I put that metal trough, garbage can, tuna can, and firecrackers? here's one for ya: (do this outside!) take dry ice and put a bit in a 2-liter plastic bottle, say about 1/5 full. now pour in water until it's about half full, screw on the cap real fast and get rid of it! the explosion is extremely loud and will have the whole neighborhood looking around outside to make sure it's not a bombing raid. you'll find the mangled bottle about 50 feet away.
