I think it's to relieve the pressure under your nail after you've smashed it. I had a black thumbnail and my grandma preceeded to stick a needle under my nail to release the pressure. I promtly passed out and busted my eye. So, I no longer had a black nail but got a black eye instead.
Be kind to your children, they ultimately choose your nursing home.
