He could have very easily done that. If you happen to cleanly break it, which I've seen pictures of power lifters doing a squat, only to have their lower leg break in half. The muscles also help keep it "attached" as it may seem.

A buddy of mine at the gym racked an 1100 lb "pick" just as he left foot broke clean in half. He weighs over 340. He had an air cast for 6 months.
He leg pressed 2300 lbs earlier that week. Glad it didn't do it then.

I do a bit of kickboxing myself, and I've seen a lot worse than that, like a punch to the head where all the bones in his hand shatter, and you could see his hand explode. Or the accidental kick to the groin, that crushed his testicles, ruptured his sack and put him in hospital for four months. Poor guy still walks funny....
