its not really that dangerous

my friends and i put dry ice in a water bottle, and my friend held on to it too long

all that happened was a loud boom (its bark is worse then its bite) and the plastic melted and froze again like immediatly

and my friend got burned on his thumb, but no shrapnel or anything

Well, you are 1/2 correct.
YOUR dry ice bomb wasn't dangerous. It will depend greatly on the strength of the vessel being used. Not all bottles are created equal.

Examples....

In junior high my friends brother made one with a GLASS bottle of some sort. He placed it inside of a cinder block and ran. It blew the cinder block in 2 pieces.

Another example.
10 years ago I was hanging out with some friends and they decided to make one out of a 2 liter bottle. We had some lumber and plywood around, so we made a box and screwed it together...NO NAILS.
When it went off, it ripped the plywood from the 2x4s it was screwed to.

I have seen MANY 2 liter bottles hold well over 200psi. Thats alot of potential energy in a bottle that big.

I don't suggest anyone make any sort of "gasous bomb" while holding it in their hands.

The kids in the video could have done it in a manner that would have kept the 2 ingredents apart until they threw it. That way they wouldn't a: get their hands or other extremeties blown off b: get shrapnel impacted into their bodies and c: covered in either alcohol or bleach, both of which are oxidizers.

Fun and safe are 2 words you NEVER use in the same sentence.

yeah monkey, some of the pranks that go aorund in our neighbourhood are people taking 2 liter bottles of coke and filling them with dry ice

about 2 hours later, theres a big boom, and it can take out a mailbox
