Looks like one of those freefall rides. It appears the bodies falling were from the cherry picker that was there to rescue the riders. Or it there to try to hold the thing up while it was repaired. Wrong tool for the job if the that was the case but maybe it was the first thing on site and time was running against them.

Sloppy maintenance is likely, and Japan is not the only one with that going for it's "amusment" parks. I've heard horror stories from everywhere about untrained inspectors, unqualified mechanics and operators, and shoddy or skipped repairs. From the sounds of it most rides are death traps just waiting for paying victims, it's a wonder there aren't more deaths.

I can only imagine it's beacuse the little rides of the travelling shows (the worst as I've heard) don't break down spectacularly and the big rides of the major parks actually do have proper inspections, operation and maintenance.

That ride looks old and shoddy anyway..

Any time I go on one of those rides I always think "man, it'd suck if my harness fell off right now"
