hmmm, I'd say many officers deserve respect, but a lot of them only want to be cops so they can be a$$holes to people. I respect law enforcement per se, but I don't respect much of the law, since it is the law of the capitalists controlling our political system and media

you're not uncommon in thinking badly of socialists, but you and most others simply don't understand the workings of capitalism, its negative effects (global warming - all real scientists agree on it by the way - the Bush admin. has tried to put gag orders on EPA scientists - if you don't want your grandchildren to die in ecological catastrophe, you should check out socialism). most people think of the dictatorial soviet union when they think of socialism, and they think socialism makes everyone equal and crap like that, but socialism doesn't imply either of these. democratic socialism existed for 3 years in Chile until a U.S.-plotted military coup overthrew Allende in '92. the Chilean general, Pinochet, who took power and turned Chile into a fascist state, has since been tried for crimes against humanity (he was apprehended while vacationing in Europe). the CIA also recently plotted a coup against Chavez in Venezuela, who, like Allende, was democratically-elected and popularly supported. fortunately the coup against Chavez failed, much to the chagrin of the CIA and the U.S. government, because the people of Caracas marched on the presidential palace in support of Chavez, and the palace guard, now reluctantly under the control of the coup, took back control of the palace and got word back to the lower military officers that they had been lied to by the generals and Chavez had not resigned but had been taken prisoner. there's a great documentary on this, called The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, with live footage in the thick of the turmoil. one very interesting thing was how the privately-owned media consistently lied to the people, trying to help the coup. anyway, you should do some reading and I think you would take a liking to socialism. capitalism produces inhuman conditions for most of the world's population. a child dies of starvation literally every second. this is not a matter of people just having too many babies either. European capitalism (imperialism) led to these conditions. they colonized the world, introduced public health, thereby boosting population growth immensely, enslaved people and forced them to extract valuable raw materials, destroyed the indigenous economy in the process,and eventually left. now the imperialism is an imperialism of economic dependency that comes out of this colonial history. ever heard of sweatshops? global sweatshop labor is much more widespread than you might think. see the documentary "Maquiladoras." the clothes you are wearing were more than likely made by a fifteen-year-old girl working 16-hour days, 7 days a week, and getting paid 25 cents an hour (whereas she makes 1000 garments a day, which sell for over $20 each). that's called exploitation.
