They have seats like that in some subway cars.
Every once in a while, if the train is really crowded, you're dying to sit down & that's the only seat. You'll end up with this pole right in front of you're face. And, you have to practically climb in & out of the seat.

It's the seat nobody wants. If you see someone sitting there, you know that they're desperate !!
