A woofer makes low to mid frequency sounds and a subwoofer makes very low frequency sounds.

Wisdom isn't just knowing what to say, it's knowing if to say it and when. This

Np! Subwoofers are somewhat optional, you have to have woofers for anything approaching decent sound. "tweeters" (which produce high frequency sounds) are also very important for good sound.
