Perhaps I'm imaginging this and pulling it all out of my ass, but I think I remember reading somewhere that some folks in the scientific community theorize that the moon was formed when the original earth was struck by another planetary body not much smaller than it and after all the bits and pieces came back together due to gravity, the leftovers became the moon.

the big bang theory is about the whole universe forming, not just the moon forming.

Another populkar moon theory is a mostly molton earth got struck and a large glob of molton material got pooted into orbit..eventually coalescing into the moon we see today...but I bet you hadda be there to really believe it.
