I got my clue from the backwards wording in one of the pictures.

They were usually bamboo needles for playing shellac gramophone records. Although records could be played using steel needles, steel was blunted much quicker than the fibre of bamboo.

I used to perform circumcisions. The pay wasn't all that good but I got to keep all the tips!

Well that may be so but one has to be cautious to not rub too long. Otherwise you're right back to a purse and have a nasty mess to clean up as well.

That has got to be the biggest hint I can give... but you've still got to know of the existence of the item to know what the devices are for.

My dad found one of these devices, with a box of the related items, over 35 years ago (I think he still has it), and had to tell me what they were.

The device in use:

Its a cutter/trimmer for fibre gramophone needles. As the needles wear down, you just trim them to a new point.
