The kitten was probably taken from his mother before she could teach him to hunt.

I've raised cats all my life. When a kitten is taken young it will not learn to hunt until he is much older when his hunting instincts develop. And he'll teach him self.
All this little fellow knows is that his food comes from a can. the bird is probably just a toy to him.

I don't really know all of this, I'm just guessing I have raise cats and usually they don't even know what a mouse is for.
