Short version the city caught on fire and a big section of downtown burned down so they build the new city on top of it and raised the street level. The old building are still under the city.

Yeah, I remember that...seems to me that there was some weird shit going on in that part of the neighborhood?!? You know, Annie; I've lived in quite a few large cities from time to time....but none of them had the allure, romance or excitement of Seattle! Is it still the same?? What part excited you the most??? I LOVED the Puget Sound and the Olympic Peninsula! The Trees made me feel like a ant walking through someones front lawn!!....Does that old steam ship "Virginia V"

http://www.virginiav.org/ was never on it, but it looks like they are still doing tours. Love the Puget Sound and the other side. Want to move over there but probably will never make it. Not a lot of work. Would love to live on the beach. love the smell of salt water.

Now that is one fine and grand "Lady" I'm licensed to Captain that steam powered vessel! Wonder if they are looking...probably not?!?! She was my introduction to Seattle....A bartenders convention/private party/night time cruise! Everybody aboard had a big bag of pot! Wow....How things have changed!!!
