During WWII, my father was involved in the North African and Italian campaigns. Three times he parachuted behind enemy lines (at night) to rendezvous with Yugoslav guerrillas. Each time a British submarine brought him back safely. During this time he received several injuries, the worst of which was grenade shrapnel in his back that caused him pain for the rest of his life. As a Master Sergeant he received the Bronze Star Medal for his heroism.
He also fought in the Korean war.
Back when Desert Storm was in the news so much, mom and dad were watching General Schwarzkopf on TV when my dad said, "Oh darn". Mom asked "what" to which dad replied, "He has two more medals than I do." Mom knew he had a lot of medals but didn't realize just how decorated he was. Like most vets, he rarely talked about the war.

My brother was a lifer in the US Air Force and volunteered for three tours in Viet Nam. Upon retirement, he worked as a Deputy for Maricopa County in Arizona for nine years. His life was prematurely ended when he answered a DD call (Domestic Disturbance).
"Responding to a domestic violence call at an apartment complex near Luke Air Force Base, Deputy Blair called for a backup but decided to enter the apartment alone when he heard a woman screaming. Blair was gunned down as he entered. The gunman, who was standing in a bedroom doorway, shot Deputy Blair once in the head and three times in the chest before using his last rifle bullet to kill himself. Deputy Blair had no chance to use the pepper spray in his hand, and the bullets that struck him all hit above his protective vest. Backup arrived seven minutes later." Ironically, the shooter was an enlistee in the US Air Force.

My daughter is getting married this December (2008). Her husband-to-be is expected to be shipped off to Iraq not to long after that. We are all, of course, concerned for him and are hoping he'll comes back safe and sound.

My sincerest heartfelt thanks to all veterans and the great sacrifices you have made.
