This makes me think of a movie from the 1970's (some sappy tear jerker) where at the end of the film, one of the lovers walks out into the water to end it all. Blast it, I can't even remember anything about the title to even try to look it up.

No, that wasn't it. But it sounds like a movie I would watch. It might have been a love story, but I can't find anything about him walking off into the water.
