i dunno about a gas can, but you can't light a puddle of gas with a cig. i've tried and tried, but it just doesn't work. but i suppose the fumes in the can could catch

Its always the fumes that catch fire. Liquid wont. But here is the catch. Solvents release huge amounts of fumes, so there are ALWAYS fumes present that can be ignited. With that comes a flash of fire that evaporates the liquid which feeds more fumes that can feed an ever growing fire, or if its growing fast enough, an explosion.
