At first glance I knew it was a P-38 Lockeed Lightning...my favorite WW11 fighter! Even Built and flowen models, An amazingly strong airframe because of the "H" airframe produced by the twin boom fueslage configuration! At first they were produced with twin "Packards V-16's" and later
equipped with the "Rolls Royse Merlin V-16" Also two on recon managed to shoot down Admiral Yamamoto in the Pacific Island theater. At the time he was the head of the Japanese Air Forces...A major blow to Japan!!!NICE JOB quEEny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well, the upgrade to the merlin helped a ton

the merlin was used in pretty much every good fighter of the final part of WWII

except the me262, but that doesnt count

Not a Mosquito - Mosquito had wheels retracting within engine bays on each wing, this has a central wheel retracting into the fuselage. It also appears to be metal - mossies were wooden.

“Designed as a high-altitude interceptor, the P-38 shot down more
Japanese planes during World II than any other US fighter.”

quoted from your article

i thought it was the entire war, not just the pacific theatre

The main part of the article is p51 all theatre wide... but mentions p38 specifically in the japanese theatre...

shrug and Im not buying into the pilots were worse at the end of the war...if they were flying and they got shot down...it counts. pre computers , pre fly by wire , pre everything almost...they had balls all right.

That's a "tail dragger"... not a tricycle landing gear config.....Although the "Mosquito" could out-climb/out-manuver her the "P-38" was the best...untill the "P-51" came alonge.
