I don't know if it's true but I heard that John Betjeman made this mistake.
He was keen on architecture as well as being a poet, and received a written request to give 'a short talk on Reading'. As it was spelled with a capital letter he thought they meant the town, so he prepared a speech on the architecture of Reading. At the end of the presentation he was thanked for a fascinating talk, but was informed that the audience were expecting something to do with reading, as in books.

well it`s the same where i live...
i live in " Tyne and Wear."
the wear part is pronounced weir as in " a small overflow-type dam." but spelt wear as in "i wear shoes"
