Baba is grandmother in many slavic languages.
Yaga is a diminutive form of the Slavic name Jadwiga, which itself comed from Old German, where hadu=battle and wig=fight.

So it's a battling grandma.

When I read Terry Pratchett's book Witches Abroad some years ago the hut with ducks feet rang some bells, so I found what he was parodying and read up on it.
