That's really not uncommon. In fact, that's why you don't hang your food up high when you're camping anymore -- the bears will try to get to it any way they can (and usually succeed, anyway) while generally hurting themselves in the process. Bear canisters are thought to be the most humane way to store food these days because not only does it not harm the bear, but all you have to do is set it somewhere far from camp.
