Easiest way to crack this illusion is to make a small box with your hands (like a movie director scoping a shot if you follow) so that all you can see is a small area at a time, you'll find that if you can look at just one intersection between the boxes at a time that there are no black dots. It is an oldie and a goodie as the poster says :)
