These are groynes . .i had no idea what they were used for until i looked it up:
"Groynes are used to reduce longshore drift, to retard erosion and to build a beach seaward. To be effective a groyne must extend from the bottom of the surf zone to the high water mark. The immediate effect is to reduce the longshore drift so that material accumulates on the updrift side. Material on the downdrift side is removed fairly rapidly."
