A little story:
When my paternal grandfather went to sign up at the start of WWII there was an Irishman in front of him. When he was asked for his name - "Murphy, sir!"
"First name?"
"Spud, sir!"
"Spud isn't a proper name Murphy, it's a nickname! Now what is your first name?"
After a pause... "I don't know sir, all me mammy ever called me was Spud."

He was signed on as a private with the name Spud Murphy.
