So why aren't books and newspapers printed in cursive?.......

because when its small, it looks cluttered

and not as many people know cursive

Items in print use serif fonts, serif means little feet. Your eyes you the feet to help distinguish the letters and to guide your eyes and keep them within the line. Serif fonts include Times New Roman and Century School Book and Garamond. The Internet uses san serif fonts, without feet. Arial and Comic Sans are examples of san serif fonts. Because they have very little adornment they can be created very small and don't break up under the low resolution that monitors have. Originally computer fonts were created with I believe it was 126 or 128 characters. A standard keyboard has 47 keys for alpha/numeric/symbol characters. Add in the shift key and you get 94 symbols/characters. That leave about 32 symbols left over for things like è with the accent mark over it, the registration ® copy write © Fractions ¼ etc. Cursive font need more than one symbol to represent a letter plus the ability to recognize which letter to use depending on which letter the are in front of or in back of. Take the lowercase letters B or O for example the letters connecting to them need to start at the top of the letter and those connecting to an A need to start at the base line. Go to start..programs... accessories... system tools... character map on a windows XP machine and you can see how complicated some fonts are.

It is all me. It is the short version. We have a 12 week on-line class called typography. The hardest part to teach is that any product you create should only have one serif, one san serif and one decorative font family in it. Font family includes various sizes and bold and italic versions of that font. Decorative fonts are either script or fancy stuff which should be used at a minimum. Most newbee's want to throw every font on their computer at a project.
Search for "Free Fonts" and you can find tons of free font sites. Or go to http://www.adobe.com/type/ to find more info and some beautiful fonts. This site's fonts are not free. They are a "professional" font company.
