Just with the three carriers that's 15,000 sailors and over 300 aircraft. What you don't see are the subs within a two hundred mile range for each carrier. The fire power on the support ships are awesome.

Thats what I love about subs. You don't see them.

Any number of 3rd world jerk offs can be sitting up at a lectern beating his shoe against it screaming death to America, and some where within range is a Trident.

That's just a "for show" formation. You would never see three carriers together in real world exercises.

I'm pretty sure this was a show of force from the U.S after North Korea launched missiles towards Japan.

No. One carrier is all that would be needed.
North Korea is not a threat as far as a military is concerned, and it doesn't take the entire 7th fleet to knock out a crappy SCUD based missle.

"you would never see three carriers".....why? is it just because at this stage one would be all you'll need, or because they are stretched over the world?..or something like that?, sorry not a military buff, lol

With aircraft taking off and landing at the same time there would be too many aircraft in the sky at one time so they need the space.

Having them too close is like having all your eggs in one basket, too great of a risk. Each carrier cost about $6 Billion to build. That doesn't include about 100 aircraft onboard, computers weapons including nuclear weapons and about 5,000 sailors. They are mini cities.

What does it take to sink a carrier? No one knows for sure since none have been sunk since WWII, and not today's modern carriers. The aircraft carrier I served on, the USS America (CV-66) now sits at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Many including myself wanted to save the ship since being decommissioned in the early 90's for a museum. The Navy resisted at every turn. Since it is the same class carrier as the latest greatest carrier it proved too valuable to see what it took to sink it, which obviously is classified.

The reason the USS America was decommissioned was only because it wasn't nuclear powered and would cost too much to retrofit it to be so. The USS America was fueld by jet fuel which is akin to kerosene. Milage? 6 inches to the gallon!~

Sorry I got wordy.

Wow, I bet you can tell some stories! Are you out of the Navy? What department did you work in? Did you ugoto while onboard or is the internet even available while at sea? I'm sure so much has changed since I got out (1981).

Yes i'm still in the Navy, next month will be 8 years. They do have internet on board now, I think almost every space has a line for hook up. I am an airframer (AMS/AMH) now theyhave combined the two and it's just the AM rating. I go back to sea duty in another 2 months, not sure which ship i'll be attached to this time around yet though.Did they allow women on the ships yet back then?

The due date for the new addition is July 10th of 2009!

visiting my good friend Fidel

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you
didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from
the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
