Imagine you were the dude in charge of carving that out of the rock and you got to the last little bit of fine detail and you accidently split one of the faces in half and it crumbled away. Wouldn't you be kicking yourself.

it technically is newly built. they had to dismantle it piece by piece to move it to higher ground when the Aswan High Dam was built in the early 70s.
