A thief who broke into a police car set up to trap criminals was caught after CCTV captured his name and date of birth - tattooed on his neck.
Aaron Evans, 21, was filmed breaking into the Peugeot 106 in an NCP carpark before making off with a stolen sat-nav.
He not only failed to spot the covert camera filming his every move but had the incriminating tattoo 'Evans 19.9.87' on his neck.
Evans was jailed for seven months after he pleaded guilty to theft and asked for ten other offences to be taken into consideration.
Magistrates in Bristol heard Evans, who cannot read or write, went to the NCP carpark on August 13 following an argument with his father.
He broke the passenger window of the Peugeot 106 after spotting the £70 satellite navigation system on full display.
The police surveillance vehicle was set up in Trenchard Street, Bristol, to catch opportunistic thieves.
Officers watched the video playback and arrested Evans on September 4.
Bristol Magistrates heard Evans, of Lockleaze, Bristol, was a persistent criminal who had been in and out of prison for the past four years.
Darren Burleigh, mitigating, told the court that jail was not the answer for Evans and would only "perpetuate the problem." He said: "My client has been subject to a series of custodial sentences and it is clear that these are not working.
"He has been subjected to violence by his step-father and has had zero stability in his life as he has not been able to call anywhere home.
"This has been made worse by his consistent custodial sentences which lead to a pattern of repeat offending.
"Four years in and out of prison and it is clear that this has not worked and does not work and is only perpetuating the problem.
"In prison cannabis is freely available to him but since his release he has become drug free.
"He is now trying to start again with a clean slate and has a one month old child who he would like to spend some time with."
Magistrate Susan Snaddon sentenced Evans to 28 weeks in prison.
She said: "These offences are so serious only a custodial sentence is appropriate."
