For my yearly Asian vacations—something that I have been doing for five years now—I picked out an island in the Philippines to spend sunny days of merry frolicking: Dumaguete.
Each and every time I go to Asia, it’s always a surprise. The Ang Kor Wat in Cambodia remains lovely, the Buddhist temples in Japan are remarkable for the sense of respectful silence that animates the simple structures. In Dumaguete, what one greets and meets at every turn is the sea, the sun and the dust.
